Signage
Signage is often taken for granted, especially by viewers... but I find it incredibly helpful in setting a scene and establishing the history and feel of a place. This is a small selection of my work in this area.
BMF: Aged Sign
BMF's setting is the poor neighborhoods of 1980s/1990s Detroit. So the signage was designed with both simplicity and built-in age to give a feeling of a run-down, impoverished community.
Sleepy Hollow: Coffee Shop Sign
A classic coffee shop sign, simple but classy, with a feeling of a bygone era.
Average Joe: Key Sign
This was for the counter of a family-owned hardware store that had been passed down from father to son. We wanted a sign that looked like it might have been there since the 1960s.
BMF: Hotel Dimensional Sign
This is a dimensional sign for a Caribbean hotel lobby. I used several materials and techniques to give it a high-end feel. The 3D mockup with callouts helped to insure that it arrived exactly as we intended.
Beauty In Black: Chicago Police Dimensional Seal
Even a fairly simple dimensional sign should have very clear instructions in order to avoid mistakes in production.
3 Months: Waterpark Sign
A 2011 period piece, the production of 3 months was interrupted by the COVID shutdown. When we re-started, we still couldn't have a theme park full of people, so some large signage had to help explain the emptiness.
Cobra Kai: GiMaster ad
For a company selling martial arts gis, I thought a high-energy fighting gi with no one in it would convey the product in a quickly-readable and fun way.
BMF: Safety Sign
For a scene taking place in an old factory, we created this worn and aged accident-tracking sign, with separate cards for numbers.
Kansas City: EKC Checkpoint signs
East Kansas City is part of the liberal "United States and Cities of America" and we leaned into liberal stereotypes to create its signage: Multiple languages reflect inclusivity and multiculturalism, cool colors represent passivity, etc.
BMF: Car Wash Mockup
This signage was painted by scenics using full-scale pounces, and this mockup for reference.
Kansas City: WKC Checkpoint Signage
West Kansas City is part of the conservative nation called simply "America" and we leaned into conservative stereotypes to create its signage: Stark red, black and white convey an aggressive tone. It is all very militaristic and "macho" and threatening.
Survivor's Remorse: Denver Airport Sign
A Denver sign that utilizes imagery of the city and, within the letters, the mountains nearby to welcome visitors.
Star: Coffee Shop Chalkboard Menu
I was proud of this one because the set dressers handled it VERY carefully, thinking that it was actually hand drawn with chalk.
Quantico: Bank Posters
My first day on my first show: I did not yet have access to a stock image site, so I took photos around the office and utilized those to make appropriate signage.
Survivor's Remorse: BAO Billboard
A full-size billboard we made for the launch of our main character's sneaker line.
Sleepy Hollow: Boxing Poster
A poster for an amateur boxing competition.
Sleepy Hollow: Colonial Times Menu
There were 3 scripted menu items with punny names, so I felt it appropriate to make the entire menu similarly punny. I had a lot of fun with this one.
Sleepy Hollow: Colonial Times Sign
This was a collaboration between our sign shop and our construction department, who provided the backing wood based on my design.
ADG Awards: Tribute Wall
My first film industry job: creating a tribute wall to celebrate the work of honoree Christopher Nolan. This is based on the Tesseract from Interstellar.
Survivor's Remorse: Plantation Sign
A sign for a plantation tour that feels like its from a theme park in order to illustrate how the plantation fails to represent its troubled history in an accurate manner.
Notorious: Police Impound Sign
Large sign for a police impound lot.
Survivor's Remorse: Radio Station Backdrop
Huge studio background for a radio station studio.
Sleepy Hollow: Transit Map
Map showing the train routes.
Sleepy Hollow: Historical Sign
A sign about the history of the area.
Life of the Party: Various College Banners
This is a small sample of the various banners that we had to pepper around an entire college campus.
